Devastating Fire in Oita City Claims One Life and Damages Over 170 Structures
Tragic Incident in Oita City
On November 19, a catastrophic fire swept through a densely populated area in Oita City, Japan, resulting in one fatality and significant damage to more than 170 buildings, as reported by local authorities.
Firefighters battled the blaze for over 12 hours after it was first reported in the Saganoseki port district on Tuesday. Authorities indicated that approximately 180 residents were evacuated during the incident. Police confirmed the discovery of one deceased individual at the fire site and are working to determine if it is a 76-year-old man who has been reported missing, according to local news sources.
The Oita prefectural government has requested assistance from the Self-Defence Forces to help manage the fire, which has affected around 48,900 square meters, including forested areas. Oita Mayor Shinya Adachi expressed optimism that the fire would not lead to additional damage.
Senior official Shogo Fujikawa from the Oita prefectural government noted, "The smoke is diminishing, and we are progressing towards controlling the situation," while also advising caution against premature conclusions.
The fire was reported to police around 5:45 PM local time on Tuesday, originating in a residential area northeast of the Saganoseki fishing port. The Japan Meteorological Agency had issued a strong wind advisory for the region earlier that afternoon.
In response to the crisis, the central government set up a liaison center at the Prime Minister's Office to monitor developments. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi pledged government support in collaboration with local authorities and expressed appreciation for the efforts of firefighters and local officials.
In a statement on social media, Takaichi remarked, "A fire erupted in Oita City, leading to one person being unaccounted for and extensive property damage. The government has initiated an information liaison office to gather updates, and the Fire and Disaster Management Agency has dispatched personnel to the scene. Additionally, following a disaster response request from the governor, the Ministry of Defense and Self-Defense Forces are conducting aerial firefighting operations using helicopters."
"We sincerely hope for the safety of the missing individual and extend our deepest sympathies to all residents affected by the cold evacuation. We are grateful for the dedication of firefighters, local officials, and the Self-Defense Forces and police. The government will collaborate with local authorities to provide maximum support," she added.
