In the early hours of Thursday, Kyiv faced a severe assault as Russia unleashed hundreds of drones and missiles, resulting in the deaths of at least 21 individuals and injuring many others. This attack, one of the most significant since the onset of the conflict, caused damage to approximately 130 buildings across the city. The sound of explosions echoed throughout central Kyiv, prompting thousands of residents to seek refuge in bomb shelters and underground metro stations, while thick smoke filled the skyline.

This incident marks the deadliest attack on Kyiv since May, with the scale of destruction being unprecedented in the ongoing war. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who cut short his trip to Ireland to return home, visited a site where a nine-story residential building had been severely damaged. He attributed part of the devastation to the failure of allies to deliver promised air defense systems. "If our partners had fulfilled their commitments on time, we could have saved more lives and homes today," Zelenskiy expressed, appearing visibly exhausted and frustrated.

In his nightly address, Zelenskiy mentioned that emergency teams were still searching through the rubble for survivors. He emphasized that the issue of air defenses would be a crucial topic at the upcoming NATO summit in Turkey, reiterating the need for Europe to develop its own air defense capabilities. "If NATO still holds significance for its allies, Europe must possess adequate defenses against all threats, including Russian ballistic missiles," he stated, confirming the current death toll of 21.

The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 74 missiles and 496 drones during the night. Air Force spokesperson Yuri Ihnat noted that the number of ballistic missiles was unusually high, with a low interception rate. Ukraine has been facing shortages of Patriot missiles in recent months. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its "massive attack" targeted military and energy facilities, as well as airports in Kyiv and other regions, framing the strikes as retaliation for Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia.

In response to the escalating conflict, Kyiv has intensified its strikes on Russian energy targets, leading to a fuel crisis in Russia, which has begun importing gasoline from countries as distant as India. The Kremlin has indicated that military commanders briefed President Vladimir Putin on the situation, asserting that Moscow would increase pressure to achieve its war objectives.

Day of Mourning in Kyiv

Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared a day of mourning for Friday, noting extensive damage across the city of approximately 3 million residents. EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernova, condemned the overnight attacks, stating that "Russia unleashed hell on Kyiv," with strikes affecting accommodations used by diplomatic personnel, although no diplomats were harmed.

City officials reported that over 90 individuals, including children and emergency responders, were injured, with some still trapped in damaged buildings. A resident, Iryna Plekhova, shared her harrowing experience on social media, describing the chaos as her home burned. The National Institute of Biochemistry was among the many facilities damaged, with its advanced laboratory severely affected.

In a precautionary measure, Poland, a NATO and EU member, briefly scrambled fighter jets, while Finland imposed a temporary aviation restriction zone in the eastern Gulf of Finland.

Increased Pressure on Russia Required

As Ukraine continues to endure relentless attacks from Russia, the need for sustained military support and increased pressure on Moscow has become more urgent. Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, announced plans to propose sanctions against more entities supporting Russia's military efforts in response to the attacks. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the strikes, describing them as part of a "deadly pattern" targeting densely populated areas.

Despite proposing peace talks with Putin, Zelenskiy noted that the Kremlin leader has rejected such discussions. He mentioned that Ukrainian and U.S. negotiators had engaged in talks recently, expressing hope for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump during the NATO summit.
