Dempo Sports Club Secures First Victory in Indian Football League with 3-0 Win
Dempo Triumphs Over Shillong Lajong
Dempo Sports Club achieved their inaugural victory in the Star Cement Indian Football League (IFL) 2025-26 season, defeating Shillong Lajong FC 3-0 at the PJN Stadium in Goa on Tuesday. Goals from Marcus Joseph, Kapil Hoble, and Richmond Kwasi Owusu secured the win.
Despite having the majority of possession, Shillong Lajong struggled to create significant scoring opportunities, as Dempo's defense held firm. This victory brought Dempo SC's points total to six, while Shillong Lajong, managed by Birendra Thapa, remained in fourth place with 11 points, according to an IFL press release.
Dempo Takes Early Lead
Dempo, under the guidance of Samir Naik, started aggressively, putting pressure on the Shillong defense from the outset. The first goal came in the sixth minute when Marcus Joseph skillfully controlled a high ball from Lajong defender Rudra Ved and struck it into the net with his left foot.
In the 24th minute, Dempo doubled their lead. A cross from left-back Saiesh Bagkar was misjudged by goalkeeper Siwel Rymbai, allowing the ball to deflect off Kapil Hoble and into the goal, making the score 2-0.
Owusu's Penalty Seals the Match
As the first half concluded, Shillong Lajong sought to respond, with Phrangki Buam coming close with a header that was saved by Dempo's Ashish Sibi. After the break, Dempo maintained their momentum and was awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute when Rymbai fouled Bagkar in the box. Richmond Kwasi Owusu confidently converted the penalty in the 55th minute, extending the lead to 3-0.
Shillong Lajong pressed for a consolation goal, generating a few half-chances through substitutes and set-pieces, but they failed to capitalize. Dempo had further chances to increase their lead, with substitute Cristian Damian Perez and Sebastian Gutierrez both coming close, but the match ended with the score unchanged.
