Demand to Rename SRN Hospital After Martyr Roshan Singh in Prayagraj

In Prayagraj, a movement led by Dr. Shah Alam is advocating for the renaming of Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital to honor Martyr Roshan Singh. On August 8, Sharad Singh, Roshan Singh's great-grandson, will pay tribute at the hospital, coinciding with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's visit nearby. The initiative aims to recognize the sacrifices of freedom fighters, especially in light of the upcoming Kakori Train Action Day. This historic site, once a notorious jail, now serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for India's independence.

Call for Renaming SRN Hospital

On August 8, in Prayagraj, the great-grandson of Martyr Roshan Singh, Sharad Singh, will visit the Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital to pay homage at his statue and advocate for renaming the hospital in honor of his ancestor. Roshan Singh, who was convicted in the Kakori train case, was executed in the very Malaka Jail where the hospital now stands. Coincidentally, on the same day, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be engaging with students at KP Ground, not far from SRN Hospital.

This movement, led by Dr. Shah Alam, founder of the Mahua Dabar Museum, aims to honor the sacrifice of the legendary martyr Thakur Roshan Singh by renaming the hospital. Dr. Alam, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike since August 5, stated that Sharad Singh will arrive at SRN Hospital to pay his respects and subsequently address the gathering. He emphasized the need for recognition of freedom fighters and their memorials during the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence and the centenary of the Kakori train action.


Supporters of the movement believe that concrete steps should be taken to honor Thakur Roshan Singh's contributions and sacrifices on a national level ahead of the Kakori Train Action Day on August 9. Dr. Alam remarked that the great revolutionary Thakur Roshan Singh made the ultimate sacrifice in the Malaka Jail of Prayagraj, which was then referred to as the 'Kala Pani' jail of the United Provinces.

Today, the Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital stands on this historic site of sacrifice.
