Demand to Rename Madras High Court to Tamil Nadu High Court Raised in Rajya Sabha

In a recent session of the Rajya Sabha, AIADMK leader Dr. M. Thambidurai urged for the renaming of the Madras High Court to Tamil Nadu High Court. He highlighted that this change aligns with the aspirations of the state's residents, as the Tamil Nadu Assembly had previously passed a resolution in 2016 requesting this modification. Thambidurai emphasized that the high court's jurisdiction extends beyond Chennai, making the current name outdated. He called on the central government to honor the people's wishes and implement this change.

Call for Renaming Madras High Court

New Delhi, August 5 - In a recent session of the Rajya Sabha, Dr. M. Thambidurai, a leader from the AIADMK party, advocated for changing the name of the Madras High Court to reflect Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that the Tamil Nadu Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution in 2016 requesting the central government to consider this change.

During the zero hour, Thambidurai emphasized that this request aligns with the long-standing aspiration of the people of Tamil Nadu. He noted that while the capital city of Madras was renamed Chennai three decades ago, the high court still retains its colonial-era name, which does not represent the sentiments of the state's residents.

He further explained that in August 2016, under the leadership of the late Jayalalithaa, the then AIADMK government had passed a resolution urging the central government to rename the Madras High Court to the Tamil Nadu High Court instead of Chennai High Court. Thambidurai asserted that the jurisdiction of the high court extends across the entire state, not just the city of Chennai, thus justifying the need for the name change.

Additionally, he mentioned that there is a bench of the high court in Madurai, making it inappropriate to limit the name to Chennai alone. He reiterated that although Madras city was renamed Chennai in 1996, the AIADMK has consistently advocated for the high court to reflect the state's name, Tamil Nadu. Thambidurai urged the central government through the chair to fulfill the aspirations of the people of the state by renaming the Madras High Court.
