Demand for CBI Investigation in Tripura Student's Alleged Racial Attack Death
Call for Justice in Anjel Chakma's Case
Agartala, Jan 13: The family of Anjel Chakma from Tripura, who tragically lost his life in Dehradun due to an alleged racial assault, is now advocating for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the incident.
On Monday, Anjel's father, Tarun Kanti Chakma, who serves as a BSF jawan in Manipur, met with Pradyot Debbarma, the founder of Tipra Motha, to express their demand for a thorough investigation.
It has been a month since Anjel's death, and his family is still awaiting updates regarding the case. "We have learned that five individuals have been detained, yet the main suspect remains at large. My family insists on a CBI investigation to expedite justice," he stated.
He also requested a transfer to Delhi to better advocate for his son's case.
Tarun Kanti Chakma mentioned that he has sought assistance from Debbarma in their pursuit of justice, who has promised to provide all necessary support.
Debbarma revealed that he has been in contact with Anjel's family since the incident occurred in Dehradun. He criticized the police for only registering a First Information Report (FIR) three days post-incident.
"Today, a promising 24-year-old has fallen victim to racial violence, and we must unite to prevent this from happening to others in the future, regardless of our political affiliations," he emphasized.
He affirmed that the nation belongs to everyone, not just those who look alike, and pledged to do everything possible to ensure justice for Anjel's family.
Anjel, an MBA student from Pecharthal in Tripura, succumbed to injuries sustained during an attack on December 9, which his family claims was racially motivated.
On December 31, the Dehradun Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into Anjel Chakma's murder, although they reported no evidence supporting claims of racial abuse thus far.
Authorities indicated that the assault occurred after Anjel confronted a group of individuals who were engaging in inappropriate banter at a liquor store.
Dehradun SSP Ajay Singh noted that the police are aware of social media discussions suggesting a racial motive behind the incident, but their investigation has yet to uncover any proof of racial discrimination or violence.
