Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Emphasizes Traffic Management and Road Safety

Focus on Traffic Management and Safety

New Delhi, August 7 - The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Tarunjeet Singh Sandhu, instructed the police on Friday to ensure there is no leniency in traffic management and road safety. He emphasized that a smooth traffic system for citizens is a non-negotiable priority. During a high-level review meeting with Delhi Police Chief Anurag Kumar, the Special Commissioner (Traffic), the Joint Commissioner (Traffic), and the Deputy Commissioner (Traffic), the Lieutenant Governor assessed the implementation of directives issued during a previous review meeting on June 29.

Additionally, he reviewed enforcement measures, preparations for the monsoon, and traffic management ahead of Independence Day. Officials informed the Lieutenant Governor that the number of waterlogged areas across Delhi had decreased to 65 as of August 5, down from 194 in 2024 and 169 in 2025. They also noted that the count of frequently waterlogged spots had reduced to 20, compared to 53 in both 2024 and 2025.

This improvement has led to better vehicle movement. According to data presented during the meeting, calls to the traffic jam helpline dropped to 572 in July 2026, down from 701 in July 2025. Similarly, complaints received via social media decreased to 1,653 from 1,792 during the same period. While reviewing enforcement actions, the Lieutenant Governor was informed that there was a 113% increase in actions taken against drivers going the wrong way.

As of July 31 last year, 164,365 actions had been taken, and this year, the figure rose to 351,523 for the same period. Between April 8 and July 31 this year, 2,321 cases were registered against serious violations of wrong-way driving. The statement indicated a 28% increase in actions against unauthorized parking, with 1,536,944 fines issued by July 31, compared to 1,194,975 during the same timeframe last year.

The total fines issued by traffic police increased from 5.423 million to 5.645 million, marking an approximate 3% rise. According to the statement, 399 encroachments were removed from roads under joint patrols by traffic and local police, and actions were taken in 1,915 cases of illegal parking. The meeting also highlighted the recently launched 'Traffic School' program.

Under this initiative, over 17,400 individuals who violated traffic rules at 710 intersections were educated about road safety. They were informed about the dangers of driving in the wrong direction, running red lights, riding three people on a motorcycle, and riding without a helmet.
