Delhi's Education System Faces Challenges Amid Rising Enrollment
Overview of UDISE+ 2024-25 Report
The recent report from the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) for the academic year 2024-25 has highlighted several critical issues regarding the education system in Delhi. While student enrollment in schools is on the rise, the development of school infrastructure and resources has not kept pace, leading to significant strain on the existing facilities. The report indicates that the average enrollment per school stands at 808 students, yet the number of school buildings has not increased in line with this growth.
Teacher-Student Ratio and Staffing Concerns
Currently, there are 161,958 teachers employed across schools, resulting in a student-teacher ratio of 28:1. This suggests that the number of teachers has remained relatively stable. The report also points out that the enrollment ratio in Delhi is the highest compared to the number of schools, indicating an increasing burden on the current facilities.
Government Initiatives for Infrastructure Improvement
A senior official revealed that the Delhi government aims to construct approximately 50 new school buildings and add 8,000 additional classrooms by the 2026-27 academic year. Out of a total of 5,556 schools, 2,681 are government institutions, highlighting the reliance of a significant number of students on public infrastructure.
Distribution of Teachers Across School Levels
According to the data, there are 2,528 schools at the foundational and primary levels, 803 at the middle level, and 2,225 at the secondary level. The distribution of teachers is as follows: 26,560 at the foundational and primary levels, 11,564 at the middle level, and 123,834 at the secondary level. The student-teacher ratios vary, with foundational levels at 14:1, primary at 18:1, middle at 28:1, and secondary at 19:1. The report also notes that 1,089 students are enrolled in single-teacher schools, raising concerns about teacher workload and classroom management.
Facilities and Gender Participation in Schools
In terms of basic facilities, 4,720 schools have functional toilets for girls, while 4,781 schools provide toilets for boys. However, only 430 schools are equipped with digital libraries, and 1,844 schools have solar panels installed. The number of admissions linked to Aadhaar stands at 4,311,104. The gross enrollment ratio indicates higher participation of girls at various levels, with a ratio of 95.7% for girls and 88.3% for boys at the secondary level. At the middle level, the ratio is 113 boys to 122 girls, at the primary level it is 100 boys to 110 girls, and at the foundational level, it is 50 boys to 54 girls.
