Delhi's Chief Minister Proposes Creation of a Super Medical Hub
Proposal for a Unified Medical Facility
On March 16, New Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced plans to merge Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Delhi State Cancer Institute, and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital into a comprehensive 'super medical hub' inspired by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
In a tweet, CM Gupta stated, 'The integration of GTB Hospital, Delhi State Cancer Institute, and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital into a super medical hub will enhance bed availability, streamline testing and referral processes, and minimize waiting times, ensuring that every patient receives prompt and improved care.'
On the previous day, she elaborated on her vision for enhancing Delhi's public healthcare framework.
'The major government medical facilities in Delhi, including Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTB), Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI), and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital (RGSSH), are being transformed into an autonomous institution similar to AIIMS. This initiative will allow millions of patients from Delhi and nearby areas to access advanced and specialized medical services in one location.'
'The quality of healthcare will see significant improvements, services will be more efficient, and high-level medical care will be more accessible to the public than ever before. This initiative marks a crucial step towards establishing a robust and dependable healthcare system in Delhi.'
This proposed integration aims to tackle the uneven patient distribution across hospitals.
For example, Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital, which has a sanctioned capacity of around 650 beds, is currently utilizing only about 250 beds, leaving nearly 400 beds unoccupied. Conversely, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, with a sanctioned capacity of approximately 1,400 beds, is currently accommodating over 1,500 patients due to high demand.
By merging these three essential hospitals into a single integrated medical facility, the Delhi government seeks to enhance coordination, optimize resource utilization, and provide more efficient patient care.
This initiative is anticipated to decrease waiting times, improve access to specialized treatments, and establish a modern healthcare hub capable of serving millions of residents in Delhi and its neighboring areas.
