Delhi's Bold Move: New EV Policy Promises Major Incentives for Electric Vehicles
Delhi Government Unveils Comprehensive EV Policy
New Delhi: The Delhi government has introduced a new electric vehicle (EV) policy that offers a complete exemption from road tax and registration fees for electric cars priced at Rs 30 lakh or below. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting on Monday.
The policy includes substantial subsidies for electric two-wheelers, providing Rs 30,000 in the first year, Rs 20,000 in the second year, and Rs 10,000 in the third year for buyers.
Starting January 1, 2027, only electric autorickshaws will be permitted for registration in Delhi, while the registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers will gradually cease, with a complete transition to electric two-wheelers by April 1, 2028.
During a press briefing, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that approximately Rs 15,000 crore will be allocated over the next four years to enhance electric mobility and combat vehicular pollution in the capital.
The policy, which is set to take effect on July 1, is seen as a significant initiative towards achieving a pollution-free Delhi by March 31, 2030, according to Gupta.
The new framework focuses on the transportation sector and outlines a strategic plan for transitioning from traditional fuel vehicles to electric alternatives.
To further promote electric vehicle adoption, the government has introduced purchase incentives for consumers.
In addition, buyers of electric three-wheelers can expect incentives of Rs 50,000, Rs 40,000, and Rs 30,000 over the first three years, respectively.
For N1 category electric trucks, a purchase incentive of up to Rs 1 lakh will be available, as confirmed by an official.
The policy also includes a scrapping incentive of Rs 1 lakh for owners of BS-IV four-wheelers or older models who choose to scrap their vehicles in favor of electric options.
It is important to note that no subsidies will be available for hybrid vehicles. An online portal will be established to facilitate applications for EV-related incentives under this new policy.
Moreover, the government plans to expand charging infrastructure, vehicle scrapping facilities, and other initiatives to expedite the shift towards electric mobility throughout the city.
