Delhi University Student Union Elections: Key Issues and Student Mobilization
Upcoming Elections and Student Engagement
New Delhi, August 8 - As the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections approach in September, student organizations are actively promoting the sentiments expressed during recent protests at Jantar Mantar and discussing campaign issues. Concerns related to admissions and longstanding demands such as metro fare concessions are among the topics being addressed. Leaders from various student groups have reported that potential candidates are beginning to connect with students in colleges to assess the issues that could form the foundation of their election campaigns.
Coalition Among Leftist Student Organizations
Anjali, the secretary of the All India Students Association (AISA) at Delhi University, mentioned that the recent student movements at Jantar Mantar could serve as a basis for a broader coalition among leftist student organizations. She stated, 'As we witnessed in the recent protests at Jantar Mantar, we have a common adversary. We hope to see a leftist alliance between AISA and SFI, similar to last year, to advance the values of the recent student protests.'
Key Demands and Student Unity
Anjali highlighted that AISA's major demands include the repeal of the National Education Policy (NEP) and the dissolution of the National Testing Agency (NTA). She emphasized that the focus for the DUSU elections will primarily revolve around student needs and issues. A member of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) from Delhi University noted that the recent protests and hunger strikes organized by the group have demonstrated that students can unite for their demands.
Addressing Administrative Challenges
He pointed out that there have been various issues with the DU administration, including seat allocations, curriculum concerns, and other matters, leading to chaos. He also mentioned that longstanding student demands, such as metro passes and fare reductions, could become focal points in the election campaigns.
Candidates Assessing Student Concerns
He added, 'These recurring issues will certainly be addressed.' However, potential candidates are currently visiting colleges and engaging with students to understand which issues are deemed most critical. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is also evaluating student problems at the college level before finalizing its electoral strategy.
Previous Election Outcomes
In the last DUSU elections, the NSUI secured victory in one position, while the ABVP claimed three positions.
