Celebrating World Environment Day

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Delhi Teachers University (DTU) organized a series of events dedicated to environmental conservation, social responsibility, and sustainable development, in collaboration with the Harijan Sevak Sangh campus and the university community. Faculty members, staff, and students participated enthusiastically, pledging to work towards nature conservation and public welfare.

Tree Plantation and Awareness Activities

The event commenced with a tree plantation drive at the Harijan Sevak Sangh campus, where various species of plants were planted, and a commitment to their preservation was made. Additionally, cleanliness drives, poster-making competitions, and environmental awareness activities were conducted, with students actively participating.

A Call for Commitment

Senior social worker Mr. Lakshmi Ji, who has been associated with the renowned activist Vinoba Bhave, urged attendees to observe Environment Day not merely as a formal event but as a 'Day of Commitment.' He emphasized that true development is only possible when a balance is established between individuals, families, society, the nation, and nature. He highlighted labor, self-discipline, and social sensitivity as the foundations of environmental protection.

Encouraging Acts of Kindness

Mr. Sanjay Kumar Rai from the Harijan Sevak Sangh thanked all participants and encouraged them to perform 'One Act of Kindness' daily. He stated that cleanliness, respect for labor, and self-reliance are the cornerstones of a better society and a cleaner environment.

Online Lecture by Environmentalist Dr. Rajendra Singh

The highlight of the second phase of the program was an online lecture by renowned environmentalist and 'Water Man' Dr. Rajendra Singh. Speaking on 'Sustainability for Future Generations,' he expressed serious concerns about climate change, water scarcity, and environmental challenges.

Addressing Climate Emergency

Dr. Singh pointed out that the world is currently facing a 'climate emergency.' Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, droughts, floods, and the continuous depletion of water sources pose significant challenges to humanity. He shared experiences from his water conservation campaigns across the country, emphasizing that solutions to environmental crises can only be achieved through the collaboration of science and local communities.

The Importance of Indigenous Knowledge

He particularly highlighted the significance of Indigenous Knowledge, stating that our villages, farmers, and local communities possess centuries-old experience in harmonizing with nature. By integrating modern science with local knowledge, more effective and sustainable pathways for environmental protection can be developed.

Water Crisis Solutions

Discussing the water crisis, he noted that groundwater levels are declining in many regions of India, rivers are becoming polluted, and adequate rainwater harvesting is not being achieved. He proposed rainwater harvesting, rejuvenation of water sources, community participation, and prudent water use as key solutions to the crisis.

Empowering the Youth

Dr. Singh urged the youth not to be mere spectators of the environment but to become its protectors and leaders. He stated that if every citizen makes small, regular efforts towards conserving water, trees, and land, significant change is possible.

A Message for Future Generations

He delivered an inspiring message, stating, 'Nature is not our inheritance; it is a trust for future generations.' He further added, 'When we save water, we are not just saving water but also life, culture, and the future.'

Gratitude and Future Initiatives

At the conclusion of the program, Dr. Saroj Malik, associated with the university's public relations and outreach activities, expressed gratitude to all participants and the Harijan Sevak Sangh family. She mentioned that through the joint efforts of educational institutions and social organizations, values of service, labor, environmental consciousness, and social responsibility can be instilled in students. She also suggested organizing labor-based activities at least once a week.

Commitment to Environmental Protection

The Vice-Chancellor and university administration emphasized that environmental protection is not limited to a single day but is an integral part of our lifestyle, social responsibility, and human values. The university will continue to promote environmental awareness, sustainable development, and social responsibility through teaching, research, and community engagement.

A Collective Pledge

On World Environment Day, the university conveyed the message of 'From Commitment to Action and Action to Change,' urging all citizens to make nature conservation, water saving, tree planting, cleanliness, and social participation a part of their lives. The program concluded with a collective pledge to strengthen environmental protection, water security, and human sensitivities.
