On Thursday, the Delhi Police dismissed rumors circulating on social media that Jantar Mantar had been closed or sealed for protests. They labeled these claims as completely false, misleading, and devoid of facts. The police clarified that Jantar Mantar remains an active and authorized location for peaceful demonstrations. According to a Supreme Court order and the associated Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), gatherings of up to 1,000 individuals are permitted at this site.

Public Appeal and Guidelines

The authorities will grant permission for protests upon receiving formal applications from organizers or individuals, provided all conditions and regulations are adhered to. The Delhi Police also urged the public not to believe or spread unverified information, emphasizing the importance of relying solely on official communications for accurate updates.

Rahul Gandhi's Demand for Inquiry

Additionally, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, has called for the establishment of an independent, high-level committee under the Supreme Court's supervision to investigate the alleged police actions against student protesters during a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on July 20. In a post on 'X', Gandhi stated that students deserve justice and that an independent committee should be formed to investigate the brutality faced by them. He also shared a video that purportedly shows police charging at protesters, with an individual in plain clothes pushing a student protester holding the Indian flag onto the road.

Opposition Protests in Parliament

This demand arose as opposition MPs protested against alleged police excesses against student demonstrators and the purported misappropriation of donations for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya at the Makar Dwaar in the Parliament complex on Thursday. Several MPs from the 'INDIA' coalition gathered around 10:30 AM, holding placards questioning who ordered the police action at Jantar Mantar on July 20. They chanted slogans demanding accountability from the central government regarding both the alleged police excesses and the financial irregularities related to donations for the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple.
