Delhi Police Make More Arrests in Turkman Gate Stone-Pelting Incident
New Developments in Turkman Gate Case
New Delhi: The Delhi Police announced on Saturday that they have apprehended three additional suspects in the stone-pelting incident at Turkman Gate, raising the total number of arrests to 16.
The newly arrested individuals have been named as Mohammad Naved, Mohammad Faiz, and Mohammad Ubaidullah, all of whom reside in the Turkman Gate area.
This follows the arrest of two other individuals on Friday linked to the same case.
The incident originated on January 7, when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) initiated a demolition operation targeting encroachments near the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque, which was conducted under court orders.
As the demolition progressed, a significant crowd gathered outside the mosque, protesting and chanting slogans against the action. Tensions escalated when some protesters attempted to breach police barricades, leading to stone-pelting directed at law enforcement.
In response, police deployed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation.
On Thursday, authorities reported that they had identified at least 30 individuals involved in the unrest.
A Delhi court has since placed eight of the accused in judicial custody until January 21.
Additionally, the Delhi Police are preparing to summon Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Mohibbullah Nadvi, who was reportedly present at the scene shortly before the violence erupted.
Police officials stated that Nadvi was asked multiple times to leave the area during the incident.
To ensure public safety, a significant presence of police and paramilitary forces has been deployed to sensitive areas, with senior officers overseeing the situation.
The investigation is ongoing, with efforts to identify more individuals involved in the incident.
