New Delhi, Oct 7: An FIR has been lodged by the Delhi Police against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with their supporters, for allegedly trespassing into the Akashvani Bhawan premises without authorization during a protest against the Chief Election Commissioner on October 6.
The FIR was filed following a complaint that claimed Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, their supporters, and other accompanying MPs entered the premises unlawfully, as stated by Delhi Police officials on Wednesday.
In response to the FIR, the Congress party criticized the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Jairam Ramesh, the party's general secretary for communications, remarked that the 'diabolical duo' of Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah appeared 'rattled' and 'desperate'.
Ramesh expressed, 'The diabolical duo is nervous, rattled, and desperate. The writing on the wall is clear.'
He further stated, 'For nearly two years, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has been consistently revealing, with factual evidence, the Vote Chori conspiracy involving the PM, HM, and the CEC.'
On Tuesday, both Rahul and Priyanka were among 260 individuals detained after an extended sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan, which lasted over eight hours, following a police blockade of their march towards the Election Commission office.
The Opposition MPs were protesting against alleged irregularities in the Election Commission's operations under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, raising concerns about 'vote chori'.
Delhi Police noted that the INDIA bloc had intended to march from Parliament House to the Election Commission on Tuesday. However, they stated that no application for permission to march had been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Police's office in New Delhi, and thus, no permission was granted.
This protest came amid increasing criticism from the Opposition regarding the Election Commission's SIR exercise and alleged discrepancies in the electoral rolls.
