Delhi Police Demands Removal of Offensive Posts from Social Media Platform X

Delhi Police Takes Action Against Offensive Content

The Delhi Police have formally requested the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to promptly remove posts that allegedly contain derogatory, malicious, and defamatory remarks against constitutional authorities. This action comes as the police investigate a protest by the 'Cockroach People’s Party' (CJP) at Jantar Mantar, which was sparked by the alleged NEET-UG paper leak, leading to significant unrest in the national capital and political turmoil across the country.

In the notice sent to the platform, the police indicated that the content in question is part of an ongoing investigation and requested the immediate deletion of the relevant posts or videos. Alongside the removal, the Delhi Police also sought the complete registration details of the account that uploaded the content, including the account holder's full name, address, contact information, email ID, and login/logout records with timestamps.

Furthermore, the police have asked X to preserve all data related to the alleged posts or videos for investigation and potential legal proceedings. They also requested that any additional information that could assist investigators be shared. The notice included a request for a certificate under Section 63(4) of the Indian Security Act (BSA) concerning electronic records.

Earlier this week, reports indicated that the Delhi Police were contemplating action against social media posts deemed offensive and derogatory. These posts targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders in connection with the CJP protest that took place on July 20 at Jantar Mantar. Police sources mentioned that after reviewing the content uploaded during and after the protest, a notice was likely to be issued directing the social media platform to remove such posts, videos, and comments.
