Delhi Police Capture Fugitive in 15-Year-Old Murder Case

In a significant breakthrough, the Delhi Police have arrested Naushad, a fugitive who had been evading capture for 15 years in connection with the murder of commission agent Atul Jain. Jain was shot dead in 2011 while returning home with a large sum of cash. The police had previously arrested four accomplices, but Naushad managed to remain at large until recently. His arrest near the Shastri Park flyover marks a crucial development in this long-standing case, shedding light on the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to resolve cold cases.

Arrest of Long-Standing Fugitive

New Delhi, August 2 - The Delhi Police have apprehended a man who had been on the run for 15 years in connection with a robbery and murder case in East Delhi. An official reported this development on Sunday, revealing that the accused, Naushad (37), who had a bounty of ₹10,000 on his head, was arrested near the Shastri Park flyover on Friday.

This case pertains to the murder of Atul Jain, a commission agent from Gandhi Nagar Market, who was shot dead on March 6, 2011, while returning home after collecting cash. At the time of the incident, Jain was carrying a bag filled with approximately ₹8.5 lakh.

A group of armed assailants intercepted him on Mangla Bazar Road in Laxmi Nagar. According to a senior police officer, the attackers allegedly attempted to rob him at gunpoint. When Jain resisted, Naushad and another accomplice, Bhura alias Mustaqeen, fired shots, resulting in Jain's death as they fled with the cash-filled bag. He was rushed to Dr. Hedgewar Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A case was registered at the Shakarpur police station under various sections, including murder, robbery, criminal conspiracy, and related offenses. The police noted that four other suspects (Arshad, Bhura alias Mustaqeen, Nadeem alias Nadda, and Zaki Anwar) had already been arrested and charged, with the court subsequently convicting them. However, Naushad managed to evade capture for years.

Recently, the crime branch was tasked with locating the fugitive, leading to surveillance of Naushad's activities. The police reported that he frequently changed his location and concealed his identity to avoid arrest. Based on intelligence that he would be in the Shastri Park area, a team set up a trap and successfully apprehended him on Friday.

According to police, Naushad is married and hails from Saharsa district in Bihar.
