Delhi Police Arrests Woman for Racial Abuse Against Northeastern Women
Incident of Racial Abuse in Malviya Nagar
New Delhi, Feb 25: Authorities in Delhi have apprehended a woman linked to an alleged incident of racial abuse directed at three women from the Northeast in the Malviya Nagar locality, as confirmed by police officials on Wednesday.
The suspect, Ruby Jain, was arrested following an inquiry into a complaint filed at the Malviya Nagar Police Station.
Reports indicate that Jain reportedly directed abusive and racially charged comments towards the three women from Arunachal Pradesh during a dispute regarding repair work at their rental property on February 20.
Initially, the case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which included accusations of criminal intimidation, insulting a woman's modesty, and inciting hostility between groups.
Later, provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were also applied.
According to a statement from the Delhi Police, the investigation has been assigned to an officer of ACP rank and is under the close supervision of senior officials.
The involvement of a male suspect mentioned in the FIR is also being investigated.
The arrest was made after reviewing video evidence and witness accounts, which suggested that racially derogatory remarks were made during the altercation.
On February 20, during a disagreement over repair work in their rented apartment, the neighbors allegedly referred to the women as "dhandhewali (sex worker)." The women had hired an electrician to install an air conditioner in their fourth-floor unit.
According to police reports, dust and debris from the drilling fell onto the floor below, leading to complaints from neighbors, which escalated the situation.
