New Arrests in Connection with Holi Incident

On Monday, the Delhi Police announced the arrest of seven additional individuals, including three women, along with a minor, related to the homicide of a man during Holi festivities in Uttam Nagar. This incident has drawn significant attention, as reported by a local news outlet.

The individuals detained on Sunday night have been identified as Sayra (40), Sareefan (50), Salma (36), Suhail (21), Sameer (20), Firoj (22), and Ismile (50), all residents of JJ Colony in Uttam Nagar. Additionally, a 14-year-old minor has also been taken into custody.

With these latest arrests, the total number of individuals apprehended in this case has reached 14, including two minors.

The victim, Tarun Kumar Butolia, suffered critical injuries during a clash that erupted on Wednesday after a water balloon was accidentally thrown by an 11-year-old girl from a third-floor balcony, hitting a Muslim woman below. This incident ignited a dispute between two neighboring families from different religious backgrounds.

Kumar tragically succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Initially, the police charged the suspects under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for attempted culpable homicide and common intention. Following Kumar's death, the charges were escalated to murder.

Authorities also invoked the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act in the first information report.

The killing of Kumar has heightened tensions in the locality, leading to damage and arson of several vehicles during protests by local residents, prompting the deployment of police and paramilitary forces.

On Sunday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi took action by demolishing a property associated with one of the accused.

While there are no legal provisions in India that permit the demolition of property as a form of punishment, this practice has become increasingly common in states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In November 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that demolishing properties of individuals accused of crimes as a punitive measure is illegal.
