Delhi Launches 'Clean Air, Healthy Delhi' Initiative to Combat Air Pollution
Introduction of the Project
The Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, has announced the launch of the 'Clean Air, Healthy Delhi' initiative. This ambitious seven-year project aims to reduce air pollution in the capital and is being financially supported by the World Bank. The initiative seeks to accelerate efforts to decrease air pollution levels in Delhi, align with the objectives of the 'National Clean Air Program', and contribute to the vision of 'Developed India 2047'.
Set to be implemented across all districts from September 2026 to August 2033, the project has an estimated budget of ₹8,300 crores. The World Bank will cover 65% of the funding, while the Delhi government will finance the remaining 35%.
Upcoming Workshop and Collaboration
Chief Minister Gupta mentioned that a workshop scheduled for July 10 will finalize preparations and ensure coordination among all stakeholders. This workshop will include representatives from various government departments, key agencies, and senior officials from the World Bank to clarify roles and develop a roadmap for timely project completion.
The initiative will focus on addressing major pollution sources, including emissions from transportation, road dust, construction debris, solid waste management, industrial emissions, greenery, and water pollution.
Long-term Investment for a Sustainable Future
Gupta described this project as a long-term investment in Delhi's future, aimed at providing clean air, improved public health, and a sustainable urban environment. She emphasized two main aspects of the initiative: the establishment of a dedicated project management unit, advanced monitoring systems, data analytics, and enhanced inter-departmental coordination, along with raising public awareness, training, and fostering innovation to improve air quality.
The second aspect involves systematically phasing out older vehicles, promoting electric vehicles, enhancing public transport, and developing an advanced system for monitoring pollution control to reduce emissions from major pollution sources.
Involvement of Various Departments and Agencies
The project will involve multiple departments and agencies, including the Environment Department, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Transport Department, Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Transco Limited, Delhi Transport Corporation, Delhi Traffic Police, Delhi Development Authority, New Delhi Municipal Council, Delhi Cantonment Board, DSIIDC, DTTDC, DIMTS, and others.
