Delhi High Court Supports AIPA's Claim for National Sports Federation Status
AIPA Achieves Legal Milestone
The All India Pickleball Association (AIPA) has made significant strides in its legal battle, receiving a favorable ruling from the Division Bench of the Delhi High Court. This decision bolsters AIPA's pursuit of official recognition as India's National Sports Federation (NSF) for pickleball.
Concerns Raised Over Ministry's Decisions
During the court proceedings, judges expressed serious concerns regarding the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS). They questioned the ministry's choice to ignore AIPA's application submitted in October 2024 while simultaneously granting NSF status to a newly established organization formed in November 2024. The Bench sought clarification on how the new body was exempted from essential eligibility criteria outlined in the National Sports Development Code (2011), especially since AIPA's application had not been formally rejected.
Court Orders Comprehensive Review
The Division Bench instructed the Union of India to present the complete original documentation related to the assessment of all NSF applications. The court emphasized that AIPA should be afforded a fair chance to submit written arguments and be heard prior to any renewal decisions, with NSF recognition set for renewal in April/May 2026. The court also specified that the case must be reconsidered without bias from previous judgments, ensuring the rights of all involved parties are maintained. The next hearing is scheduled for May 11, 2026.
AIPA's Legacy vs. New Competitor
Established in 2008, the All India Pickleball Association has dedicated over 15 years to promoting pickleball throughout India, boasting 25 state associations and district-level affiliates, along with international recognition since 2023. In contrast, the competing organization was formed only in late 2024, shortly after AIPA's application was submitted, and received exemptions from critical eligibility requirements, such as the three-year existence rule and minimum affiliations at state and district levels.
AIPA Responds Positively to the Ruling
In response to the court's proceedings, AIPA expressed that the hearing serves as a strong affirmation of its longstanding contributions to the sport and highlights the necessity of due process. The association is optimistic that a thorough examination of the records will validate its rightful claim and reiterated its trust in the judicial system as the case progresses.
A Pivotal Moment for Pickleball Governance
This development marks a crucial point for pickleball governance in India, a sport that is rapidly gaining popularity. It underscores the importance of transparency, merit, and institutional integrity in the recognition of national sports federations. The All India Pickleball Association stands as the oldest and most established body for pickleball in India, having significantly contributed to the sport's growth and development for over 15 years, representing athletes, coaches, and state associations nationwide.
