Court Directs Immediate Hospital Transfer

New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court mandated the immediate transfer of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 due to alleged irregularities in examinations, from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.

The directive came from a bench led by Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, following an appeal from Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali Angmo. She contested a previous ruling by the High Court that declined to intervene in his treatment at the government facility.

The court instructed the director of Medanta Hospital to assemble a team of qualified doctors to monitor Wangchuk's condition continuously. It emphasized that the medical team should administer treatment in accordance with established medical standards and protocols, which Wangchuk is expected to adhere to.

The court recognized Wangchuk's right to be transferred to a hospital of his preference, aligning with his fundamental rights under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta confirmed that the government had no objections to the transfer.
