Court Ruling on Age Limit for NSD Admissions

The Delhi High Court has intervened to suspend the upper age limit of 30 years set by the National School of Drama (NSD) for its three-year diploma program in theatrical arts. This ruling allows applicants to apply for the program regardless of their age. Justice Jasmeet Singh presided over the hearing and noted that imposing an upper age limit in a talent-based field like acting appears arbitrary and seems to violate fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19(1)(g), and 21 of the Constitution.

Advocate Vivek Gurnani, representing the petitioners, challenged the admission notification issued by NSD, which stipulated a maximum age limit of 30 years until July 1, 2026. The petitioners, aged 34 and 42, were qualified based on their skills and experience but were denied admission solely due to their age. The court remarked that acting and theatrical skills can be developed and refined at any stage of life. It concluded that such a stringent age limit does not align with the course's objective of nurturing artistic talent.

Taking these arguments into account, the court granted interim relief by suspending the contentious age limit condition. It further directed that the petitioners be allowed to apply for and participate in the admission process without regard to their age.
