Bail Granted to Former BJP Leader
The Delhi High Court has granted bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former BJP leader serving a life sentence for his involvement in the Unnao rape case, on Tuesday (December 23). The bench, comprising Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, ordered Sengar's release upon the submission of a personal bond of ₹15 lakh and three sureties of the same amount.
The court instructed Sengar to stay at least 5 kilometers away from the victim's residence and prohibited him from threatening her or her mother. Additionally, he is required to remain in Delhi during the bail period. The court warned that any violation of these conditions would result in the cancellation of his bail, stating, "Bail will be revoked for any breach of conditions." Sengar's sentence has been suspended pending the resolution of his appeal against the lower court's conviction in December 2019.
The court clarified that Sengar's bail will remain effective until the High Court delivers its verdict on the appeal filed against the lower court's decision.
This case dates back to 2017 and involves the abduction and rape of a minor girl. Following directives from the Supreme Court, the hearings for this case and related matters were moved from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi on August 1, 2019. Sengar has also filed an appeal to suspend his sentence related to another case concerning the death of the victim's father while in custody, for which he received a 10-year prison term. This appeal is currently pending in the High Court.
