Delhi High Court Demands Action on Auto and Taxi Fare Regulations
Court Orders Government to Ensure Compliance with Fare Notification
The Delhi High Court instructed the state government on Wednesday to provide details regarding the measures taken to enforce the 2023 notification concerning fares charged by auto rickshaw and taxi drivers in the national capital.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, also requested information on the number of fines issued for violations of fare regulations by auto and taxi drivers.
The court issued notices to the Delhi government, the transport department, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), asking them to submit a status report regarding a petition that seeks immediate implementation of the public order (notification) among all auto rickshaw drivers within a month.
The bench emphasized that the status report should include the number of fines issued, the standard operating procedures in place, the complaint resolution mechanism, and the steps taken by the Delhi government's transport department to enforce the notification issued on January 9, 2023.
This hearing was prompted by a petition filed by lawyer Anil Nimesh, which raised concerns about auto rickshaw drivers charging excessive fares and not adhering to the meter rates.
