Delhi Government Takes Major Steps for School Safety and Higher Education

In a significant move, the Delhi government has declared 108 schools unsafe and initiated structural audits to ensure children's safety. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered the demolition of dilapidated buildings and plans to construct new schools on vacant plots. Additionally, a new campus for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University has been approved, promising modern facilities and increased access to quality education for thousands of students. Significant Safety Measures for Schools in Delhi

The Delhi government has implemented a crucial and stringent measure concerning the safety of children. A total of 108 government and government-aided schools in the capital have been declared 'unsafe and hazardous.' Prioritizing the safety of students, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered an immediate structural audit of all old government school buildings in Delhi. Initial assessments by the education department and the Public Works Department (PWD) revealed that 54 of these buildings are in extremely dilapidated and dangerous conditions. In response, the government has initiated the demolition process, with plans to first raze seven school buildings within the next few months.

Digital Profiling and New School Construction Plans

The education department will conduct digital profiling of all school buildings, assessing structural integrity, fire safety, and other security standards. Meanwhile, the PWD will evaluate the safety and costs associated with the existing school structures. Additionally, the government has launched a plan to construct new permanent school buildings on 27 vacant government plots. This work will be carried out in phases to ensure that students' education remains uninterrupted.

New Campus for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University Approved

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has also approved the construction of a new campus for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University in North Delhi's Dheerpur, with an estimated cost of ₹1,668 crores. This new campus is expected to enhance access to quality, modern, and future-ready higher education in the capital, providing thousands of students with world-class academic facilities. The Expenditure Finance Committee, chaired by Chief Minister Gupta, has given the green light for this project, which was discussed in a meeting attended by Delhi's PWD Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh, Education Minister Ashish Sood, and senior officials from relevant departments.

Implementation of the New Campus Project

The PWD will now work on the next steps for implementing this project. The new Ambedkar University campus in Dheerpur will not only boost Delhi's higher education capacity but also set a new standard for a modern, inclusive, and sustainable educational environment.

Campus Features and Student Capacity

According to the Chief Minister, this state-of-the-art campus, spread over approximately 20 hectares (50 acres), will be developed in phases to accommodate around 8,000 students. The first phase will provide housing for 5,400 students, along with hostel facilities for 840 students and accommodations for faculty and staff.

Modern Facilities in the New Campus

The new campus will feature a modern academic block, a central library, an administrative building, student amenities, a large auditorium with 2,500 seats, sports infrastructure, and parking facilities.
