Delhi Government Launches Free Travel Card for Women and Transgender Individuals
Introduction of the 'Pink Saheli' Card
The Delhi government has initiated the distribution of the 'Pink Saheli' card, aimed at providing free bus travel for women and transgender individuals. This program, launched on Monday, will establish around 50 centers across the national capital to facilitate access to various public transport systems using a single smart card.
According to an official statement, approximately 50 centers, including district magistrate offices and select locations of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), will be authorized to issue these cards.
Each Pink card will be linked to the beneficiary's mobile number and Aadhaar, ensuring verification of age, gender identity, and residency in Delhi.
Launch of the Pink National Common Mobility Card
During a ceremony, President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the 'Pink National Common Mobility Card' along with three other welfare schemes for women initiated by the Delhi government.
Under this initiative, eligible women residing in Delhi will be able to travel for free on DTC buses. Additionally, this card can be used for paid travel on other public transport services, including the Delhi Metro and the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
The statement mentioned that the Pink card will replace the existing paper-based pink tickets.
Enhanced Accessibility and Security in Public Transport
This initiative aims to make public transport more accessible, technology-driven, and secure. Three types of cards will be issued: Pink for eligible women, Blue for general passengers, and Orange for monthly passes. The first phase will see the rollout of the Pink and Blue cards, while the Orange card will be introduced later.
The DTC has authorized 'Hindon Mercantile Limited' (MuffinPay) and 'Airtel Payments Bank Limited' to facilitate the issuance of these cards. These cards will be integrated with the existing automated fare collection system in the public transport network of the national capital.
The Pink card will be provided free of charge at the government's expense.
