Delhi Faces Traffic Chaos as Protests Against Election Commissioner Intensify
Protests Disrupt Traffic in Delhi
New Delhi: For the second day in a row, strict traffic regulations were implemented across various areas of Delhi as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) escalated its protests demanding the ousting of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
As per a traffic advisory from the Delhi Police, diversions began at 6 AM, significantly impacting traffic flow around key locations such as Jantar Mantar, Connaught Place, Mandi House, and Patel Chowk.
These restrictions are part of a broader security measure following the CJP's announcement, along with student groups like the Students' Federation of India (SFI), that protests would persist until their demands are addressed.
The affected routes include the Ashoka Road-Jantar Mantar roundabout, Tolstoy Marg-Janpath crossing, and several intersections near Connaught Place.
Traffic disruptions are also anticipated at Mandi House, the Minto Road-Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg junction, and various underpasses in the area.
During a press briefing at HKS Surjeet Bhawan, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde stated that daily marches to Jantar Mantar would continue until Kumar is removed from his position.
Shinde further claimed that protesters, including Abhijeet Dipke, faced harsh treatment from the Delhi Police during their detention.
On Sunday, police reported that CJP leaders Dipke, Ranka, and Das had been placed under preventive arrest and would be presented before an Executive Magistrate at the Delhi Cantt Police Station.
SFI general secretary Srijan Bhattacharyya mentioned that students would conduct peaceful protests, utilizing locations where police barricades hindered their movement as protest sites.
The traffic police have urged commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and allocate extra time for journeys to railway stations, inter-state bus terminals, and the airport, especially when navigating through New Delhi and central areas.
They indicated that restrictions would be adjusted based on real-time evaluations of the situation and encouraged the public to stay updated via their official website and social media channels.
