Delhi Experiences Above Average Rainfall in Early August

Significant Rainfall Recorded in Delhi

New Delhi, August 9 – The capital has already surpassed its average rainfall for August within the first eight days of the month. The Safdarjung Observatory, a key weather station in the city, has reported a total of 230.1 millimeters of rain so far. By Saturday morning at 8:30 AM, 225.7 millimeters had been recorded since the start of the month.

Following this, an additional 4.4 millimeters of rain fell between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM on Saturday, bringing the total to 230.1 millimeters. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the average rainfall for Delhi in August, based on climate data from 1991 to 2020, is 226.8 millimeters. Notably, Saturday marked the highest rainfall recorded in a single day in August over the past two years.

During the 24 hours leading up to Saturday morning at 8:30 AM, Safdarjung experienced 98.7 millimeters of rain. The previous record for a single day in August was on August 1, 2024, when 107.6 millimeters of rain was recorded.

In addition, rainfall measurements from other areas included 104.6 millimeters in Palam, 115 millimeters in Ayanagar, 89.8 millimeters in Ridge, and 86.8 millimeters in Lodhi Road by Saturday morning. From 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Ayanagar received the highest rainfall of 16 millimeters, followed by Ridge with 9.4 millimeters and Lodhi Road with 6.5 millimeters, while Safdarjung and Palam both recorded 4.4 millimeters.

The weather department has indicated that light to very light rain is expected in some areas of Delhi over the next two days.
