Delhi Court Reserves Order on Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam's Bail Applications

A Delhi court has reserved its decision on the bail applications of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, who are involved in a major criminal conspiracy related to the 2020 riots. Despite previous bail requests being denied by the Supreme Court, the defendants argue that there has been little progress in their trial over the past six months. Both have been incarcerated for nearly six years. The court's decision date remains unannounced, following a thorough hearing of arguments from both parties.

Court Proceedings on Bail Applications

A Delhi court has decided to reserve its order regarding the second bail applications filed by Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in connection with a significant criminal conspiracy linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. After hearing arguments from both sides on Friday, the court has yet to announce its decision. The new applications argue that despite the Supreme Court rejecting their previous bail requests, there has been minimal progress in the trial over the past six months, during which both defendants have spent nearly six years in jail.

The hearing took place at the Karkardooma Court, which completed the proceedings before reserving its decision on the applications. This marks the second time Khalid and Imam have sought bail in this case, with their earlier requests being dismissed by the Supreme Court on January 5 of this year.

In their latest applications, the defendants contended that there has been no significant advancement in the proceedings six months after the Supreme Court's ruling. They highlighted their prolonged incarceration over the past six years while the trial continues. During the previous hearing, the court had issued a notice to the Delhi police, requesting a response to the new bail applications. Following the arguments from both parties, the Karkardooma Court concluded the proceedings and reserved its order, with the date for the decision yet to be announced.
