Delhi Court Deliberates on Custody of Former Minister Satyendar Jain in Corruption Case
Court Proceedings on Corruption Allegations
New Delhi: A Delhi court has postponed its decision regarding the Anti-Corruption Branch's request for 14-day judicial custody for former minister Satyendar Jain, ex-Delhi Jal Board CEO Udit Prakash Rai, and three other individuals implicated in a corruption case tied to the tendering process for sewage treatment plant projects managed by the DJB.
Additionally, the court is also set to rule on another application from the ACB that seeks police custody for Ankit Srivastava, a former contractual consultant associated with the DJB.
Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh is expected to deliver the ruling soon.
The other individuals facing charges in this case include private citizens Nagendra Yadav, Raja Kumar Kurra, and Pankaj Verma.
During the hearing, Jain's attorney argued that after the FIR was filed on May 10, 2024, his client was summoned only once on August 5, 2026, and then again via a phone call on Tuesday, leading to his arrest.
The defense claimed there was insufficient evidence to warrant the arrest.
Rai's counsel also contested the legality of his client's arrest, noting that Rai is currently serving as a secretary in the Mizoram government.
Lawyers representing the other accused individuals similarly challenged the basis for their arrests.
The case originated in May 2024, following a complaint from the Directorate of Vigilance regarding alleged extensive irregularities, manipulation of tender conditions, and a criminal conspiracy in the tendering process for the enhancement and modernization of sewage treatment plants operated by the DJB.
