Delhi Begins 2026 with Poor Air Quality and Fog

As 2026 dawns, Delhi grapples with severe air quality issues, marked by an alarming AQI of 382. The Central Pollution Control Board has categorized the air quality as 'Very Poor', with some areas experiencing 'Severe' levels. Factors contributing to this situation include low wind speeds and cold temperatures, which trap pollutants. Health advisories recommend that vulnerable populations limit outdoor activities. The Indian Meteorological Department forecasts light rain, which may offer some relief from pollution but could also lower temperatures. With the GRAP regulations in place, restrictions on construction and vehicle use are expected to continue in the coming days.

Severe Air Quality Concerns in Delhi

On the first morning of 2026, the national capital, Delhi, was enveloped in dense fog and pollution. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the average Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded on January 1 was 382, categorizing it as 'Very Poor'. In certain areas, such as Anand Vihar, the AQI reached 'Severe' levels.

Key Updates:

AQI Status: Between 7 and 8 AM, the AQI fluctuated between 372 and 382. Many monitoring stations out of 36 reported 'Very Poor' conditions, while some indicated 'Severe' levels.

Causes of Pollution: The pollutants are trapped due to low wind speeds, cold temperatures, and fog. Major contributions come from vehicles, industries, and surrounding areas.

Health Advisory: Individuals with respiratory issues, children, and the elderly are advised to take precautions. It is recommended to limit outdoor activities and wear masks.

Weather Forecast

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a possibility of light rain or drizzle today due to the influence of a western disturbance. This may provide slight relief from pollution, although it could lead to a drop in temperatures. The minimum temperature is expected to be between 9-11°C, while the maximum could range from 14-16°C. Dense fog is reducing visibility, affecting flights and traffic.

In the coming days, the AQI is likely to remain in the 'Very Poor' category. The GRAP regulations are in effect, which include restrictions on construction activities and vehicle usage.
