Guwahati, April 25: The Northeast is bracing for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall over the next few days, with conditions expected to last until at least the first week of May.

According to the latest update from the IMD, Assam and Meghalaya will see widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (with speeds of 30-50 km/h) on April 24, 25, and again from April 28-30. Other states like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will experience similar weather from April 26-28, with lightning expected in Arunachal Pradesh from April 25-30 and in the other mentioned states on April 24 and 25.

On April 26 and 27, a thundersquall with wind speeds reaching 50-60 km/h, gusting up to 70 km/h, is anticipated over Assam and Meghalaya. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya on April 25 and 26, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may see heavy rainfall from April 27-30. Very heavy rainfall is likely in Arunachal, Assam, and Meghalaya during the same period.

Private weather forecasters have echoed these predictions, indicating that the adverse weather will continue at least until the first week of May, with total rainfall accumulation potentially reaching between 300-700 mm.

In the pre-monsoon season since March 1, Assam has recorded a significant 57 percent increase in rainfall.

For Guwahati, there is a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm within 24 hours) along with thunderstorms and lightning in various parts of the city over the next three to four days.

This situation may worsen waterlogging, slow down vehicular traffic, and heighten the risk of localized landslides in susceptible areas. The city authorities and the ASDMA are actively monitoring the situation and have put emergency response systems on high alert.

The ASDMA has urged residents to take necessary precautions and stay vigilant, advising daily commuters and long-distance travelers to adjust their plans and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
