Commission of Inquiry Conducts Visit to Assess Manipur Violence Impact

The Commission of Inquiry is currently in Manipur, conducting a three-day visit to gather firsthand accounts from displaced families affected by the violence in 2023. Led by Justice (Retd.) B.S. Chauhan, the team is assessing living conditions in relief camps and interacting with local authorities to deepen their understanding of the humanitarian impact. This initiative aims to ensure that the inquiry reflects the experiences of those directly affected by the conflict. The Commission was established by the Centre to investigate the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023 and has received multiple extensions to complete its report.
 

Investigation into Manipur Violence

The team visited relief camps in Bishnupur, Churachandpur, Imphal West and Imphal East districts. 


Imphal, May 31: A Commission of Inquiry is currently conducting a three-day investigation into the violence that occurred in Manipur in 2023, running from May 29 to 31. The team is engaging with displaced families and local officials in various affected districts to collect direct testimonies and enhance its ongoing inquiry.


This visit is part of the Commission's commitment to gather evidence and insights from those impacted by the violence, ensuring that the inquiry reflects the experiences of the affected communities.


The Commission aims to develop a thorough understanding of the events and their consequences through this initiative.


Justice (Retd.) B.S. Chauhan leads the Commission, which includes members Himanshu Sekhar Das, IAS (Retd.), and Aloka Prabhakar, IPS (Retd.).


During their visit, the Commission met with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to discuss the goals and activities of their investigation.


The team visited relief camps in Bishnupur, Churachandpur, Imphal West, and Imphal East districts, assessing the living conditions of displaced individuals and gathering their personal accounts regarding the violence's impact.


In Churachandpur, the Commission toured the Prefabricated Relief Camp at Torbung, where they spoke directly with camp residents, listening to their stories of displacement, struggles, and concerns stemming from the conflict.


Residents shared their issues, living conditions, and expectations from the authorities during these interactions.


This visit allowed the Commission to document firsthand testimonies and gain a deeper understanding of the humanitarian consequences of the violence.


The Centre established the Commission of Inquiry on June 4, 2023, to investigate the ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur in May 2023.


Initially led by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, who resigned in February 2026 for personal reasons, Justice (Retd.) B.S. Chauhan took over as Chairperson on March 1, 2026.


The Centre has retained the other two members of the three-member panel and has granted the Commission six extensions to date. Under the most recent extension, the panel is expected to submit its final report by November 20, 2026.
