Arunachal Pradesh Launches Winter Adventure Tawang Initiative to Boost Sports Tourism

Arunachal Pradesh is making strides in winter sports tourism with the launch of the Winter Adventure Tawang initiative. Chief Minister Pema Khandu highlighted the program's role in developing a vibrant winter sports ecosystem and promoting adventure tourism in Tawang. With 46 trainees receiving expert training in skiing and snowboarding, the initiative aims to nurture local talent and position Tawang as a premier destination for adventure sports. The picturesque Panga Teng Tso Lake serves as the training ground, offering ideal conditions for winter sports. This program not only engages youth in adventure activities but also strengthens the region's reputation as a hub for adventure tourism.

Itanagar, April 11: The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, announced that the Winter Adventure Tawang initiative is a significant move towards establishing a dynamic winter sports culture in the state, while also tapping into Tawang's vast adventure tourism potential in the eastern Himalayas.


Khandu made these comments during his visit to the ongoing training program at Panga Teng Tso Lake, where he engaged with participants involved in skiing and snowboarding training sessions.


In a post on a social media platform, he stated, “Visited the #WinterAdventureTawang 2026 training at Panga Teng Tso Lake, marking a step towards developing a winter sports ecosystem in Arunachal Pradesh.”


He emphasized the scale of the initiative, noting that 46 trainees are receiving specialized training in skiing and snowboarding through the SkiMo India Federation.


“This initiative not only cultivates local talent but also enhances Tawang’s status as a leading adventure tourism destination,” Khandu remarked.


He described the program as a promising start for engaging youth in adventure sports, highlighting its potential for fostering youth involvement, sports development, and sustainable tourism in the area.


During his visit, Khandu interacted with the trainees and observed their training at the high-altitude lake.


“With trainees of Winter Adventure Tawang 2026 at Panga Teng Tso Lake, young participants from across Arunachal Pradesh and beyond are being trained to meet the challenges of high-altitude winter adventures,” he noted.


Additionally, the Chief Minister took a ride on a Polaris Voyageur snow vehicle during his visit, stating, “Taking the Polaris Voyageur for a spin at Panga Teng Tso Lake. In the heart of the Tawang Himalayas, every challenge is an opportunity to sharpen our resolve.”


Reflecting on the region's unique climate, he added, “Snow in April. In Tawang, winter lingers and so does the spirit of adventure.”


The Winter Adventure Tawang training program, organized in the border district, aims to promote structured winter sports while enhancing the region’s image as a growing hub for adventure tourism, according to officials.


This program offers comprehensive training in skiing and snowboarding, including safety protocols and preparation for high-altitude endurance.


The scenic Panga Teng Tso Lake serves as an ideal backdrop for winter sports, and such initiatives are anticipated to create new opportunities for youth, positioning Tawang as a key destination for winter adventure sports in India.
