Debate Arises Over PM Modi's Decision to Reduce Security Convoy Size
Concerns Over Prime Minister's Security
The decision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to downsize his security convoy has sparked a significant debate across the nation. While some view this move as a step towards fuel conservation and simplicity, numerous former police officials, senior intelligence officers, and security experts have raised alarms regarding the implications for the Prime Minister's safety. They argue that, given the current global and regional security landscape, compromising on the Prime Minister's protection is not an option.
Expert Opinions on Security Risks
Former RAW Secretary Samant Goyal expressed his concerns about this decision, highlighting the current international security climate as highly unstable and sensitive. He noted that even in some of the world's most secure nations, attacks on top leaders have occurred. With various terrorist and hostile elements actively plotting against India, particularly those sponsored by neighboring countries, the need to enhance rather than reduce the Prime Minister's security measures is critical.
Changing Nature of Security Threats
Goyal emphasized that the nature of security threats is rapidly evolving, with dangers such as drones and long-range precision weapons emerging. He believes that the Prime Minister's security should be continuously reassessed and fortified. He firmly stated that any reduction in the Prime Minister's security cannot be justified in the interest of national safety.
The Importance of Discretion
He further remarked that security should not be viewed as a status symbol but rather determined by the assessment of threats. Since his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat, Prime Minister Modi has faced ongoing threats. International gangs and extremist terrorist organizations have long targeted him. A significantly reduced convoy could make it easier for adversaries to target him, making it essential to maintain confidentiality regarding the Prime Minister's vehicle and activities.
Support from Former Officials
Former Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief SP Vaid noted that the Prime Minister's actions send a message that if he can take steps for fuel conservation, citizens should also follow suit. However, he reiterated that the Prime Minister ranks among the most threatened leaders globally, and there should be no leniency in his security. He expressed confidence in the Special Protection Group (SPG), asserting that it is a highly professional organization that will uphold security standards under all circumstances.
Government's Clarification
It is important to note that the responsibility for the Prime Minister's security lies with the SPG, one of the country's most trained and specialized security units. The government has clarified that the decision to reduce the convoy size was made without compromising security. Reports indicate that Prime Minister Modi has instructed the SPG to cut the convoy size by approximately fifty percent and to promote the use of electric vehicles within his fleet.
Context of the Decision
This decision is reportedly influenced by the rising energy prices globally due to the crisis in West Asia and the need for fuel conservation. Recently, Prime Minister Modi also urged citizens to adopt fuel-saving measures and embrace simplicity, encouraging shared travel, public transport, remote work, and a reduction in unnecessary foreign trips.
