Intense Encounter in Saranda Forest

Bonai: Reports indicate that multiple Maoists were killed during a confrontation with security forces in the Saranda forest, located in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district near the Odisha border on Sunday, according to officials.

The firefight commenced around 5 AM as part of a combing operation in the Chhotanagra and Jaraikela police station regions, as stated by the state police headquarters. Dr. Michael Raj, the Inspector General (Operations) of Jharkhand Police, mentioned that initial reports suggest several Maoists lost their lives in the clash, although no bodies have been retrieved yet.

Search efforts are ongoing in the wooded area. This encounter followed an earlier improvised explosive device (IED) explosion set off by Maoists in the Timra forest area, under the jurisdiction of the Chidiya outpost of Manoharpur police station, along the Odisha-Jharkhand border. Officials confirmed that the IED had been pre-planted. Assistant Commandant Ajay Mallik from the CoBRA 209 Battalion suffered severe injuries due to the blast.

Mallik's left leg was critically injured, prompting his airlift to Ranchi, and subsequently to New Delhi for advanced medical care as his condition worsened. In response to the explosion, paramilitary forces initiated extensive search operations in the bordering regions.

During the confrontation in the forest between Marang Ponga and Kinbir villages, Maoists opened fire on security personnel, leading to a prolonged exchange of gunfire. Head Constable Vikram Yadav was shot in the abdomen and critically injured, necessitating his airlift to Ranchi and later to New Delhi for specialized treatment.

Another soldier, Sanjeev Kumar, sustained minor injuries. Senior officials, including Raj and the Inspector General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), visited the injured at the hospital. The Saranda forest is recognized as a significant Maoist stronghold.

The operation was launched based on specific intelligence, according to officials. Sources reported that weapons were found at the encounter site, although official confirmation is still pending. The CPI (Maoist) has been involved in a long-standing insurgency against the Indian government, particularly in eastern and central India.
