Deadly Clash in Chhattisgarh: Security Forces and Maoists Engage in Gunfight
Fatal Encounter in Bijapur District
In a violent confrontation on Wednesday in Bijapur district, three members of Chhattisgarh's District Reserve Guard and 12 alleged Maoists lost their lives, as reported by a local news source.
According to Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Yadav, two additional personnel from the District Reserve Guard were injured but are currently in stable condition.
The deceased security personnel have been identified as Head Constable Monu Wadadi, along with Constables Dujaru Gonde and Ramesh Sodi.
This incident marks a grim milestone, raising the total number of security personnel fatalities in Chhattisgarh this year to 23, as noted by the news report.
The gunfight erupted during a coordinated operation initiated by security forces following intelligence reports regarding Maoist activity in the vicinity, according to unnamed officials.
Participating in the operation were teams from the District Reserve Guard of Bijapur and Dantewada, the Special Task Force, and the Central Reserve Police Force’s Commando Battalion for Resolute Action.
The exchange of gunfire commenced around 9 AM and continued until the evening, after which security forces conducted search operations and discovered the bodies of 12 unidentified suspected Maoists.
So far this year, a total of 275 suspected Maoists have been reported killed in confrontations across Chhattisgarh. In the Bastar region alone, over 400 suspected Maoists were reported killed in the 2024-2025 period, as stated by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in June.
In 2024, security forces were responsible for the deaths of 217 suspected Maoists in Chhattisgarh.
Reports indicate that while many of those killed in the Bastar region were labeled as reward-carrying Maoists by police, several families contest these claims, asserting that the deceased were civilians.
The Union government has consistently pledged to eradicate Maoism by March 31, 2026.
