Patna, Oct 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a critical weather alert for Bihar as Cyclone Arnab approaches, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and lightning to the area. The adverse effects are expected to last until October 31.
In light of the cyclone's intensification, 26 districts, including Patna, Jehanabad, Begusarai, Gaya, Khagaria, Lakhisarai, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Saharsa, Samastipur, Supaul, Aurangabad, and both East and West Champaran, have been placed under 'Yellow' and 'Orange' alerts.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecasted, with wind gusts potentially reaching 50 km/h across the impacted regions.
After making landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast, Cyclone Arnab has been moving northwest across the Indian subcontinent.
As it travels inland, the cyclone is affecting a wide area, prompting increased vigilance across the state.
Initial reports from Andhra Pradesh indicate significant destruction, with six fatalities reported, alongside uprooted trees and considerable damage to properties.
In districts like Vaishali, the effects of Cyclone Arnab are already evident, with heavy cloud cover leading to mid-day darkness, followed by intermittent rain and a noticeable drop in temperatures.
Local farmers are facing immediate threats to their livelihoods as the unseasonal rains and cloudy conditions severely damage paddy crops that are ready for harvest.
This ongoing weather system is expected to further lower daytime temperatures and disrupt daily life significantly.
The Meteorological Department is actively monitoring the cyclone's path and speed, advising residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel during storms and high winds.
Winds are expected to reach speeds of 50 km/h during this period, with warnings for heavy rainfall and intense lightning.
In response to the advance warning from the Meteorological Department, citizens are urged to seek safe shelter during the adverse weather conditions.
During lightning events, it is advised not to take shelter under trees or poles and to avoid open fields.
Due to the storm's severity, the Disaster Management Department has also been placed on high alert.
