Cyclone Arnab Heads Towards Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam/Bhubaneswar: The cyclone 'Arnab' has formed in the Bay of Bengal and is moving towards the coast of Andhra Pradesh. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), it is expected to reach near the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on the morning of October 28. Wind speeds could reach between 125 to 135 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially hitting 150 kilometers per hour. In light of the cyclone's threat, several states have issued alerts for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The administration has ramped up rescue and relief preparations, anticipating high waves in the sea. As a precaution, 64 trains have been canceled, and numerous flights from Gannavaram Airport have also been affected.

Current Status and Expected Landfall of the Cyclone

The IMD reported that at 11:30 AM on October 27, Cyclone Arnab was located at 16.2 degrees North latitude and 83.7 degrees East longitude in the west-central Bay of Bengal. Initially moving northwest, it has now turned towards the northwest. It is projected to cross the coast as a very severe cyclonic storm on the morning of October 28, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to coastal areas. Authorities in the affected states have been alerted to prepare for the severe weather.

Warnings of Heavy Rain and Strong Winds in Odisha

In anticipation of the cyclone's impact, the IMD has also issued alerts for widespread rainfall in Odisha. According to Manorama Mohanty, director of IMD Bhubaneswar, several regions in the state are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on October 28. Residents are advised to exercise caution and follow the guidelines issued by the weather department.

The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam on October 28. Additionally, some areas in Chhattisgarh are also expected to receive significant rainfall, raising concerns about flooding in low-lying regions. The administration is closely monitoring potentially affected areas.

Potential Damage to Crops and Infrastructure

The strong winds accompanying the cyclone pose a threat to both public life and agricultural infrastructure. Mritunjay Mahapatra, the director general of the IMD, has warned that stormy winds could disrupt electricity and communication services. Furthermore, standing paddy crops and horticultural produce may suffer extensive damage.

Sea conditions are reported to be extremely severe, with wave heights potentially reaching up to 14 meters. This situation increases risks for coastal residents and fishermen at sea. Authorities have advised caution regarding maritime activities, emphasizing the need for vigilance in operating boats and ships.

Preparedness Measures in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh

To mitigate potential damage from the cyclone, preparations have been intensified in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Odisha's Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida held a meeting with district administration and disaster management officials in Rayagada, which included representatives from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), and the fire department. The meeting focused on strategies for cyclone response, evacuating affected individuals, and providing immediate assistance in emergencies.

According to Mohsen Shahidi, deputy inspector general of NDRF, meetings have also been conducted at the level of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and cabinet secretaries to minimize cyclone-related damage and save lives. Plans for relief and rescue operations are being developed to ensure minimal loss of life during the storm. Agencies have been instructed to remain vigilant in potentially affected areas and to act promptly if necessary.

Deployment of NDRF Teams Across Five States

A total of 31 NDRF teams have been deployed across five states and the Union Territory of Yanam to tackle the cyclone. According to Shahidi, there are 12 teams in Andhra Pradesh, nine in Odisha, four in Chhattisgarh, three in Telangana, and two in Yanam. Additionally, 60 ODRAF teams are on standby for relief and rescue operations in Odisha, while approximately 11 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in Andhra Pradesh and other affected areas.

The administration has identified low-lying areas at risk of flooding and is planning to relocate residents to safer locations. Arrangements are being made to transport people to relief camps if necessary. Disaster management teams are prepared to address potential flooding, road disruptions, and other emergencies.

Fishing Advisory and Flight Cancellations

Due to the severity of the cyclone, special warnings have been issued for fishermen. PLN Murthy, director of the cyclone warning center at IMD, stated that the storm in the western Bay of Bengal intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm at 2:30 AM on October 27. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until the morning of October 30.

Various warning signals have been issued at coastal ports. The Kakinada port has been marked with GD-10, indicating extreme danger, while GD-9 has been issued for Visakhapatnam and Gangavaram ports, and GD-8 for Machilipatnam and Nizampatnam. These warnings aim to alert port workers, fishermen, and those involved in maritime transport about potential dangers.

In light of the cyclone's expected impact, several flights from Gannavaram Airport in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, have been canceled. This includes Indigo flights to Kadapa, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru, as well as an Air India Express service to Visakhapatnam.

Train Cancellations and Safety Measures

In response to the cyclone threat, the railway authorities have taken precautionary measures. The South Central Railway's Vijayawada division has decided to cancel 53 local and 11 long-distance trains, totaling 64 affected trains. Railway officials indicated that strong winds and heavy rainfall could disrupt rail operations, prompting this safety-first approach.

PE Edwin, the additional divisional railway manager, stated that monitoring of railway tracks has been intensified. Staff equipped with safety equipment and communication systems have been deployed to ensure immediate action in emergencies. Assistance booths have been set up for passengers, and officials have urged people to travel only if necessary and to check for the latest train information before planning their journeys. The rapidly changing weather in coastal areas may continue to impact rail services.

Heavy Rain Forecasted in Telangana

The effects of Cyclone Arnab are also expected to be felt in several districts of Telangana. The weather department forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the state on October 28, particularly in Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahbubabad, and Khammam districts. Additionally, areas in Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Warangal, Hanamkonda, and Suryapet may also experience significant rainfall.

In the capital city of Hyderabad, light rain is anticipated in one or two locations. Given the weather warnings, residents are advised to stay updated on local weather conditions and to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather.

Weather Alerts in Uttar Pradesh Following Cyclone

As the cyclone progresses, weather changes are expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh as well. Alerts for thunderstorms and rainfall have been issued, with wind speeds potentially reaching 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. Residents are advised to remain vigilant during strong winds and to adhere to the guidelines provided by the weather department.

In response to Cyclone Arnab, vigilance has increased across regions including Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Yanam, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. Relief and rescue agencies are prepared for the anticipated impacts of strong winds, heavy rainfall, high sea waves, and disruptions to transportation services. The administration's priority is to ensure the safety of residents in affected areas, facilitate timely evacuations, and minimize the impact on essential services such as electricity, communication, and transportation.
