Cycling Promoted as a Path to Health and Development in India
Union Minister Advocates for Cycling
Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, emphasized the vital role of cycling in India's progress towards becoming a developed nation. He made these remarks while participating in the Cycling by the Sea event, organized by the Sports Authority of India in Thiruvananthapuram, as part of the Fit India Movement. The cycling rally spanned from Chacka ITI to Shanghumukham Beach.
Cycling: A Foundation for Health
During his address, Mandaviya stated that a healthy nation is built on the foundation of healthy citizens, labeling cycling as essential for a healthy lifestyle. He noted that cycling not only promotes physical well-being but also contributes to reducing pollution, alleviating traffic congestion, and conserving fuel.
Growing Popularity of 'Sundays on Cycle'
The Minister encouraged the public to adopt cycling as a regular practice, highlighting the Sundays on Cycle initiative under the Fit India Movement. He shared that this program, which started at 200 locations, has now expanded to 10,000 locations, engaging nearly 200,000 participants. He praised the involvement of children and youth in this initiative.
Community Participation in Thiruvananthapuram
The cycling rally saw participation from the Union Minister, women's groups including ASHA workers and Kudumbashree members, athletes from the Sports Authority of India, and cycling enthusiasts. Thiruvananthapuram Mayor VV Rajesh joined the Minister for the event. Approximately 200 individuals participated in the rally, which was inaugurated at Chacka by MLA V. Muraleedharan and Arjuna Award winner P. R. Sreejesh. A Zumba session was also held for participants prior to the rally. This initiative aims to promote Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Fit India Movement, encouraging citizens to embrace an active and healthy lifestyle through cycling and other fitness activities.
