New Delhi, May 30: A cyberattack targeted the CBSE revaluation portal on Saturday, leading to disruptions in its payment system and impacting approximately 50 students.
According to sources, unauthorized individuals compromised the HDFC-linked payment system of the portal, resulting in erratic fee displays for those affected. In some instances, the amounts displayed varied dramatically, ranging from Re 1 to nearly Rs 67,000-68,000.
"It appears that either for amusement or with malicious intent, the system displayed one rupee and then jumped to Rs 67-68,000. About 50 students experienced these fluctuations," a source revealed.
The issue was traced back to the HDFC payment gateway integrated with the portal, occurring when the system was activated.
"The portal had been non-functional for a significant period. There were discrepancies regarding the amounts for 50 students, and hackers manipulated the system," the source added.
Additionally, four public sector banks—State Bank of India, Canara Bank, Indian Bank, and Bank of Maharashtra—have been incorporated as supplementary payment gateways.
Experts from IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur, along with the Digital Infrastructure Corporation of India, are currently assessing the system to enhance the portal and payment gateway integration, as stated by the source.
"The teams are reviewing the code and system to ensure it operates smoothly and without glitches," the source mentioned.
On May 24, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to address the payment and technical challenges faced by students during the CBSE post-result and revaluation processes.
During their discussions, it was agreed that the aforementioned public sector banks would assist the CBSE in fortifying its payment gateway infrastructure and integrating it with the post-exam portal, according to the education ministry.
"Their payment gateway has now been synchronized with the CBSE portal. We conducted a test run yesterday, and it appeared to be functioning well," the source noted.
"Previously, there were space issues, which led us to migrate to Amazon Web Services (AWS). The system is now hosted on AWS," the source concluded.
