Cyber Crime in Ahmedabad: AI Technology Used for Fraudulent Loans
Emerging Cyber Crime Trends in Ahmedabad
As digital technology evolves rapidly, so do the methods employed by cybercriminals. A recent incident from Ahmedabad has raised significant concerns regarding banking security and identity verification systems.
According to reports, the cybercrime unit of Ahmedabad police has apprehended four suspects who allegedly utilized AI technology to fraudulently secure a loan in the name of a businessman. The accused reportedly created fake videos of the victim using tools similar to Google's Gemini, thereby deceiving the Aadhaar verification process.
This case came to light when a businessman involved in import-export activities was unable to receive a one-time password from his bank for two consecutive days. Growing suspicious, he contacted the police, prompting an investigation. It was discovered that the mobile number linked to his Aadhaar had been changed without his consent, redirecting all messages to the suspects' numbers.
The police revealed that the suspects attempted to open accounts in various banks using the victim's Aadhaar number and other personal details. Reports indicate that they successfully opened an account with Jio Payments Bank, from which they secured a loan of ₹25,000. Additionally, the suspects attempted to gain access to the businessman’s digital locker to retrieve important documents.
Investigators noted that the technology used in this case was highly advanced. One of the suspects was employed at a Common Service Center and misused his authority to access tools associated with the Aadhaar system.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Kanubhai Parmar, Ashish Vanand, Mohammad Kaif Patel, and Deep Gupta. The police stated that a thorough investigation is underway to determine how many other victims may have been targeted by this gang.
This incident emerges at a time when concerns regarding the increasing use of artificial intelligence in the country are on the rise. Recently, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held discussions with senior bank officials about potential threats posed by new technologies to the banking system.
