Ronaldo Speaks Out on National Team Exit

Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding his abrupt exit from the Portuguese national team camp, asserting his continued availability for selection. The Al Nassr forward detailed his disagreements with head coach Jorge Jesus, which led to his early departure during the UEFA Nations League.

The Tipping Point: Frustration During Norway Match

The 41-year-old football icon was part of the Al Nassr squad that won trophies under Jesus's management. Tensions escalated during Portugal's match against Norway when Ronaldo was instructed to warm up, anticipating he would play in the second half. However, Jorge opted not to field him, leaving Ronaldo visibly frustrated on the sidelines.

Jorge attributed the decision to tactical considerations, further straining the relationship between the coach and the legendary player.

Ronaldo Clarifies His Reasons for Leaving

In a detailed Instagram post, Ronaldo expressed his commitment to the national team, stating, "If I am physically fit and scoring goals for my club, I will always be available to compete for our national team after serving any suspension."

He elaborated on his dissatisfaction with being benched despite warming up, saying, "I warmed up from half-time and watched the minutes pass without being called on. The manager broke his promise to me."

'This Wasn't the First Broken Promise'

Following the incident, Ronaldo and Jesus met with Simao Coutinho, the sporting director of Al Nassr. Ronaldo claimed they agreed that Jesus would publicly clarify the situation, supported by an eight-point plan. However, he felt that the coach's subsequent comments did not align with their private discussions, stating, "It was the second time he had broken his word to me, prompting my decision to leave the camp without waiting for more unfulfilled promises."

In response, Jesus denied that any such agreement was made but left the possibility open for Ronaldo's return to the national squad. Ronaldo also expressed regret to his teammates and the Portuguese public for his departure, indicating he would accept any penalties from the Portuguese Football Federation.

Looking Ahead with the National Team

As the captain and all-time leading scorer for Portugal, Ronaldo addressed rumors regarding a potential farewell match. He remarked, "I've heard discussions about farewell matches and the Federation wanting to honor me. However, I believe that nothing is given freely in life."

"I assure my fans, especially the Portuguese, that there will be farewell matches in the future. But my primary focus remains on competing for the national team. I recall when I received news of my father's passing while with the national team; I chose to stay until the end of the next day's match. I prioritized my commitment to the country over any club obligations."

Ronaldo's recent comments have quelled immediate speculation about his future with the Portuguese national team, emphasizing his desire to compete rather than simply seek a farewell.
