Jammu, April 27: A well-known criminal was shot dead during an encounter at a checkpost in Jammu district, as reported by local police on Monday.

According to officials, the incident occurred late Sunday night when the suspect allegedly opened fire on a police team stationed at a naka in the Miran Sahib region.

Acting on credible intelligence regarding the suspect's movements, a police team from the Miran Sahib station set up a checkpoint and increased surveillance in the area.

The suspect, identified as Abhineet Singh, was a member of the Nagi gang and had a criminal record with over 13 FIRs against him, including charges of attempted murder, rioting, and arms smuggling. He arrived at the scene on a motorcycle with an accomplice.

When the police signaled them to stop, the pair attempted to flee and opened fire on the officers. In self-defense, the police returned fire, prompting both suspects to escape, leaving their motorcycle behind in the darkness.

Authorities pursued the suspects and later discovered Abhineet Singh injured in a nearby canal, while his accomplice managed to evade capture.

Singh was transported to the Government Medical College in Jammu, where he later died from his injuries. His body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and a manhunt is underway for the fleeing accomplice.

Jammu has witnessed ongoing gang conflicts, primarily driven by competition for control over smuggling routes, drug trafficking, and other illicit activities.

Historically, two rival gangs in Jammu have engaged in violent confrontations, particularly after their leaders fell out following years of collaboration.

While police efforts have significantly reduced the presence of criminal gangs in Jammu, some factions are still reportedly active in the outskirts of the city.
