Joint Operation Leads to Arrests

Silchar, May 7: In a collaborative effort, Assam Police and the Assam Rifles apprehended two individuals during a search operation in the FCI Road area of Ramnagar, located on the outskirts of Silchar, linked to the discovery of weapons and ammunition.

The suspects, Laishram Tiken Meitei and Monalisha Chanu, are reportedly from Manipur and were residing as tenants at the home of Akram Ali, where the operation took place.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Rajat Kumar Pal, authorities received a complaint from a resident in the Lakhipur district who had received a letter in an unfamiliar language.

“Upon decoding the message, we discovered it contained a threat of extortion,” he explained, noting that through technical evidence, police were able to identify the suspects and locate their residence.

It was revealed that the pair had been living together, pretending to be a married couple.

In response to the extortion threat, a case was filed at Lakhipur Police Station under Case No. 64/2026, invoking Section 308(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 25(1)(a) of the Arms Act.

During the raid, law enforcement recovered a 9 mm Italian-made pistol, live rounds, and a Chinese grenade.

“The sophisticated weapons we seized are typically not possessed without a license. We also disposed of the Chinese grenade safely, along with various ID cards and books in multiple languages,” Pal stated.

Cachar Superintendent of Police Sanjib Kumar Saikia informed that a thorough investigation is currently in progress.

“We are exploring all possible angles as part of the ongoing inquiry,” he added.

When questioned about the implications of finding arms and explosives in a densely populated area, Saikia reassured residents that there was no cause for alarm.

He mentioned that Cachar Police have heightened surveillance in sensitive areas of the district and emphasized that law enforcement remains vigilant against any activities that could disrupt public safety.

This incident follows a recent anti-drug operation near the Assam-Manipur border on May 5, where a senior police officer sustained serious injuries after being shot at by suspected traffickers during an encounter with a Cachar Police team in Dinglang Basti, Lakhipur subdivision.
