Aizawl, Aug 5: A tragic incident unfolded in Mizoram's Lunglei district when a 15-year-old girl, who had been missing since Monday night, was found dead on Wednesday morning. This discovery has led local authorities to initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her untimely death.
Local reports indicate that the girl left her home around 8 PM on August 3 and did not return. Concerned for her safety, her family began searching for her, with assistance from local residents and the Young Mizo Association (YMA).
The search efforts continued throughout Tuesday and resumed early Wednesday, culminating in the discovery of her body around 10 AM in a bush located behind Mualthuam North Middle School.
Residents noted that the area where the body was found had already been searched the previous day. However, it was during a renewed search on Wednesday that the body was located.
Some locals who were among the first to arrive at the scene reported that the girl had visible injuries to her neck and that her body showed signs of a possible struggle. They also mentioned that the clothing she wore when she disappeared was still intact. These observations, however, have not been independently verified.
Following the recovery of the body, police from Lunglei arrived promptly to begin their investigation.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. As of now, police have not released any information regarding the circumstances leading to the girl's death, and further updates are anticipated.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the leading student organization in the state, expressed their shock and sorrow. They described the deceased as a bright student and called for a comprehensive investigation, urging law enforcement to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The MZP also extended its condolences to the grieving family, expressing solidarity during this difficult time.
