New Delhi, Sept 7: The tragic collapse of a multi-storey building in Satya Niketan, located in southwest Delhi, has resulted in seven fatalities as rescue efforts continue into the second day. The situation remains precarious as authorities are uncertain about how many individuals might still be trapped beneath the rubble.

So far, twelve individuals have been rescued from the wreckage of the decades-old structure, which fell on Sunday in a densely populated area near Delhi University's South Campus.

According to National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Inspector General Narendra Bundela, rescuers currently lack a precise count of those potentially trapped.

Government Response and Safety Measures

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site on Monday morning and announced that the government would enhance its efforts to address unsafe buildings, mandating structural audits for such properties. She emphasized, “No hazardous building will be overlooked; all will undergo a structural audit, and necessary actions will follow.”

Gupta also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J P Nadda are actively monitoring the ongoing situation.

Medical Response and Support for Affected Students

AIIMS reported that eleven patients were admitted to its JPN Apex Trauma Centre following the incident. Among them, five were declared dead upon arrival, and another critically injured patient later succumbed to their injuries. Currently, three patients are receiving treatment, including one who has undergone limb surgery, while another with minor injuries has been discharged after observation.

In response to the tragedy, several colleges affiliated with Delhi University have stepped in to support affected students. Institutions such as Sri Venkateswara College, Aryabhatta College, Motilal Nehru College, and Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma (ARSD) College declared a holiday and opened their facilities to students who are unable to return to their accommodations safely.

These colleges are providing temporary shelter and essential supplies, including food and water, to those impacted by the collapse. A student from Motilal Nehru College remarked, “Our college is closed today due to the incident at Satya Niketan, where the PG collapsed. Many students from our college were there, which is why it is closed today.”

Community Concerns and Ongoing Rescue Efforts

The building collapse has raised significant concerns among students residing in Satya Niketan, a crowded neighborhood known for its paying guest accommodations and eateries that primarily serve Delhi University students. Many are expressing worries about the structural integrity of buildings in the vicinity. As rescue operations persist, authorities have yet to confirm if additional individuals remain trapped under the debris.
