Nagaon, May 10: Authorities have apprehended three additional suspects linked to the violent Morikolong dacoity incident in Assam's Nagaon district, which resulted in the death of a woman who was injured during the robbery.
The latest arrests occurred on Saturday, with Nagaon Police detaining Rajibur Rehman, Rejak Ali, and Nur Hussain Ali from Lakhimpur district.
With these new arrests, the total number of individuals taken into custody in this case has reached six, as confirmed by officials on Sunday.
Nagaon Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das provided an update on the investigation, stating that police were able to solve the case by following various leads obtained during their inquiries.
“Our investigation was ongoing, and we received several leads. Based on this information, we executed the recent arrests,” the SP explained.
Authorities suspect that two additional individuals may have participated in the crime and are actively working to locate and apprehend them. “Currently, six suspects are in custody. We believe there are only two more involved,” the SP noted.
According to police reports, the suspects were part of an inter-district gang responsible for the violent robbery at a doctor's home in Morikolong during the early hours of April 24.
Investigators revealed that the robbers broke into Dr. Saikia's residence around 2:30 AM, assaulted the couple, and made off with cash, jewelry, and other valuables.
Police have recovered a Bolero vehicle allegedly used in the dacoity and seized two machetes believed to have been employed during the attack.
“The perpetrators committed the robbery and subsequently discarded two machetes and a bag in the Morikolong dump area before fleeing towards Guwahati. We retrieved the blood-stained machetes from the dump site, which will undergo forensic analysis,” Das stated.
Investigators also confiscated several mobile phones from the suspects, which reportedly provided significant evidence linking them to the crime.
According to the SP, the suspects targeted the doctor's home under the assumption that the family possessed considerable wealth after observing the gold jewelry worn by the victims.
“The robbers noticed the gold chain and assumed the doctor had substantial money at home. However, after the robbery, they only found around Rs 1.5 lakh. They later realized the gold ornaments were fake and discarded them on the road,” Das explained.
The situation escalated tragically when Dr. Saikia’s wife, Ruprekha Bhuyan, who suffered severe injuries during the attack, passed away on Sunday while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Guwahati.
In light of her death, police indicated that murder charges would be added against the suspects. “With the woman’s passing, we will also include murder charges against the accused,” Das added.
All arrested individuals are currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
