Guwahati, July 12: In a series of anti-poaching initiatives at Assam's Raimona National Park, authorities have detained three individuals, including two suspected poachers and one absconding suspect linked to a wildlife crime involving the illegal hunting of a spotted deer.
The individuals taken into custody are Sukur Mushahary (35) and Parbeswar Narzary (38), both from the Kachugaon Police Station area, along with Ramal Goyary from Kokrajhar district.
Sonali Ghosh, the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Council Head of Department for the Bodoland Territorial Council, reported that the first operation commenced following credible intelligence received about three weeks prior regarding the presence of five to six unidentified individuals within the national park.
Acting on this information, officials intensified surveillance and conducted thorough investigations in vulnerable forest areas.
Through persistent intelligence gathering and strategic planning, a joint operation by the Forest Department and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) led to the arrests of Mushahary and Narzary.
Initial investigations indicate that the two were allegedly involved in the illegal hunting of endangered species within the ecologically sensitive Raimona National Park.
Authorities are currently working to identify and capture additional members of the suspected poaching ring.
In a separate incident, the Janagaon Beat Team apprehended Ramal Goyary during routine patrols in the Sanfan Range of the park, where he and others were reportedly found attempting to fish, an activity that is prohibited in protected areas.
Upon interrogation, forest officials learned that Goyary had been evading capture in connection with a wildlife offence case from July 15, 2024, related to the illegal hunting of a spotted deer in the park.
Others in his group managed to escape into the forest before they could be caught. Efforts are ongoing to identify and locate the remaining suspects.
